ABC Wednesday: G is for Greggs

The popular franchise Greggs moved recently within Clarendon Mall. It has taken over the unit formerly occupied by Sylvio's restaurant which closed quite a few years ago.

Greggs' old position has been taken over by Poundland bakery and I've heard they've moved into the sites of previous Greggs in other nearby towns.

For more G posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Shepley Street

Shepley Street lies off Mottram Road opposite Massey's.

Originally it was a street of terraced house, typical of others in the area. Now the terraces at the bottom end have been replaced by modern bungalows and access on to Mottram Road is for pedestrians only.

The last bungalow on the left is #16 whilst the first terraced property is #28 or in other words 13 old homes have been replaced by 8 new homes.

Changes in Clarendon Place

The discount grocery store on Clarendon Place closed down a few months ago. Since then the outside of the building has been replastered. It looks as if it is due to reopen soon as a furniture store.

Behind the store is the Queens hotel with its distinctive chimneys, whilst above the Clarendon Mall is the apartment block, John Grundy House.

On Hyde DP Xtra you can see before and after shots of the plastering on the side of the store.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Steps to Godley Station

Last week I showed you shadows on Godley Station.

Here now are the shadows on the first set of steps leading up to the station.

There are two sets of steps to climb up to get to the platform and it would have been nice to have been able to sit down whilst waiting for the train but I only had a couple of minutes to wait.

More shadows can be found at Hey Harriet.

Last week I showed you the entrance to Vincent Park at Godley.

Just inside are these benches.

Sepia Scenes: Frames Snooker & Pool Hall

Frames Snooker & Pool Hall was housed in an old mill on Mount Street.

I'm not certain but I think it has closed down. A taxi-driver I asked yesterday said he hadn't heard of it closing but when I tried to telephone the advertised number for the club it was unobtainable.

Other parts of the mill are still used by a variety of small businesses.

A view of the mill from across the garden of nearby Chartists House can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

ABC Wednesday: F is for Flowery Field Free House

On the corner of Well Meadow and Spring Gardens is a public house called the Flowery Field. It is a "free house" but that doesn't mean they give the drink away. The term is used to distinguish it from a "tied house" which is owned by a brewery. Landlords of tied houses are only allowed to sell beer brewed or approved by the brewery. Free house landlords are free to to buy and sell the wares of different producers.

As a non-drinker myself I cannot tell you anything more specific about what you might find inside.

For more F posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Thornbank House

Old house on Great Norbury Street. For some reason the stone nameplate is now incorporated into the wall which suggests it has been extensively repaired at some stage.

Microwave left behind

The Beacon charity which used to be in Quadrant House have now moved out. As I passed by recently I noticed an abandoned mircrowave by the door.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Godley Station

The bench and shelter on the Manchester bound platform at Godley Station had just been painted and was possibly still wet. I didn't test it. Meanwhile the fence posts cast shadows across the platform.

Here we have one of the Exit doors from the Clarendon Mall onto Market Place opposite the Jolly Carter.

Of course from the opposite direction the same door becomes an Entrance.

A view down Mill Lane towards Haughton Green

Another view from top deck of the 206 bus. This time we are looking down Mill Lane with another 206 coming the other way.

Mill Lane leads to Clarke's Bridge (not to be confused with Captain Clarke's bridge) over the River Tame. On the other side the road climbs up to the village of Haughton Green.

You can view all the photographs and a slide-show of my journey on the 206 all the way to Piccadilly on Geo-trips.

An old bench on Market Street

I must have been past here hundreds of times but it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I noticed this bench on Market Street by the Shepherds Call. It is almost as if it has been swallowed by the wall behind and the weeds beneath.

Shadows across Dowson Road

A few days ago I showed how Dowson Road looked on Monday morning when re-surfacing work began whilst on Hyde DP Xtra I showed you how it looked a week earlier when still awaiting re-surfacing.

On Tuesday morning the sun was shining and casting shadows across the road. Traffic was disrupted all day. From Wednesday through to Friday little happened apart from heavy rain falling on the road. On Saturday morning the workmen were back again putting down the top layer of tarmac. By the middle of the afternoon they had packed up and gone.

You can see the machine that laid the tarmac and how the road looked on Saturday afternoon on Hyde DP Xtra.

For more Sunday Shadow Shots see Hey Harriet.

Yet more reflections by Captain Clarke's bridge

Following on from my post last Sunday here is another look towards Captain Clarke's bridge on the Peak Forest Canal taken from the field opposite the towpath. It was taken back in April and we don't seem to have had much fine weather since then.

Who, you might ask, as people do, was Captain Clarke? Find out on Old Hyde.

For more reflections visit Weekend Reflections.

For more bridges visit San Francisco Bay Daily Photo on Sunday.

Market Street from the 206 bus

A view of Market Street from outside the Brook Surgery.

We are on the 206 service from Gee Cross to Manchester Piccadilly. A new half-hourly daytime service was introduced recently. Originally it was routed directly down Market Street, stopping at the EE stop last used during the construction of the new bus station. Due to passenger demand the 206 has since been routed through the bus station so this view won't be repeated.

Coming up the road from the bus station is the 304 service to Marple. That service operates twice a day, three times a week and used to go over Werneth Low Road but now it travels via Woodley.

You can view all the photographs and a slide-show of my journey on the 206 all the way to Piccadilly on Geo-trips.

Sepia Scene: Gair Street

Gair Street is a typical cobble-stoned terraced street off Old Road in the Flowery Field area.

While similar streets have been demolished this one has survived.

ABC Wednesday: D is for Dowson Road resurfacing work

Dowson Road from the end of Garside Street on Monday morning as work starts on a major resurfacing of the carriageway.

They'll be working from 9 till 4 for a week working on one side of the road at a time and allowing traffic along the other side controlled by temporary traffic lights. The delays are predicted to be horrendous.

See how it looked last Wednesday before the work began on Hyde DP Xtra.

For more D posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Mary Street

There's not a lot left in Mary Street these days espacially since the demolition of the Caxton Works that stretched the length of Edward Street from Mary Street to Dukinfield Road.

See how it looked in July 2009.

More reflections and shadows at Captain Clarke's Bridge

A look today through Captain Clarke's bridge on the Peak Forest Canal. It is more often seen from the opposite direction showing its more photogenic side.

Who, you might ask, as people do, was Captain Clarke? Find out on Old Hyde.

Weekend Reflections: Market Street Colonnade

Last Sunday I showed you shadows of the Market Street colonnade.

Today I am at the bottom of the street outside Waterworks the bathroom showplace looking up Market Street. I've slightly adjusted the perspective of the shot as well as making it monochrome in order to highlight the shadow in the window.

You can view a wider, coloured shot on Hyde DP Xtra.

For more reflections visit Weekend Reflections.

Sepia Scene: Long Meadow Passage

Long Meadow Passage leads from Market Street into what is now a car park at the end of Clarendon Street and close to the bus station.

It once ran to Long Meadow Mill but that was demolished as long ago as the 1900s.

The bollard at the end now prevents its access to motor vehicles.

I showed you the view in the opposite direction in March 2010 and a view of the Market Street entrance in July 2008.

ABC Wednesday: C is for Cemetery Chapel

At one time there were three chaples in Hyde Cemetery. One one now remains and it's future too is understood to be threatened.

See how it looked in 2000 on Old Hyde.

More photographs of the cemetery can be found on Hyde DP Xtra.

For more C posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Another empty shop

This was a furniture emporium on Market Street but is now another empty shop. I'm showing it today not so much to highlight the downturn in trade (new shops are opening up elsewhere - Hyde is not as dead as some would have you think) but to show another view of the colonnade that runs along the bottom end of Market Street - see last Sunday's shadow shot.

Postcard from Hyde

The CDPB theme for the 1st of August is Postcard-worthy so I decided to create a four-part postcard.

Top left is an autumn scene of Captain Clarke's Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal.

Top right is Hyde Market at springtime.

Bottom left is a winter view of Market Street.

Bottom right is Gee Cross Fete this summer.
