A tale of six shops

When the estate of modern houses off Grosvenor Road was built in the late 1960s this was a row of six shops. There was a hairdressers, fish & chip shop, greengrocers, butchers, bread shop and newsagents.

By 2009 when I posted a photograph on Hyde Daily Photo Volume 1 only the hairdressers at one end and Yogi's convenience store at the other end remained. See how Yogi's News & Off-licence looked in July 2011.

Now even Yogi has gone and the shop converted to residential use only. The old hairdressers is now the offices of a heating engineer.

Splash!

Compared to rest of the country we got off very lightly but on 23rd December there was flash flooding on Dowson Road. The pavement was completely awash and pedestrians had a dreadful time.

Approaching Knott Fold

The sign approaching Knott Fold Bridge (#121 on the former Cheshire Lines Committee route from Woodhead and Godley Junction to Apethorn and Stockport (Tiviotdale) reads:

HORSES SHOULD KEEP
TO THE GRAVEL PATH
WHERE PROVIDED

NO GALLOPING

The route is now part of the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network Route #62. The gravel path on the left has been more-or-less reduced to a muddy track.

See how the sign looked in July 2009.

This view is from the opposite direction to the one I posted last Sunday.

Beeley Street

Looking out from the multi-storey car park at Clarendon Place. A few years ago parking was free on the upper storeys but after charges were introduced very few people parked on the higher levels. It is due to be demolished and replaced by a KFC outlet. Beeley Street used to be the home of the Hyde Lads Club which was demolished in 1992 to make way for the ground car park.

The Iceland store on Travis Street in the background was built on the site of the former Ritz Cinema.

The original coloured version of this view can be seen on Geograph.

A view looking up into the multi-storey car park can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Houses on Dowson Road

When Dowson Road was built in the 1930s bypassing Stockport Road through Gee Cross, most of the houses built alongside it were semi-detached but here we have a group of six large terraced properties.

Inconsiderate reflections

Reflections in a car parked at the end of Market Place not only on double-yellow lines but also blocking the dropped kerb which is in frequent use by people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

The blockage causes them to make long detours or to venture onto the busy road carriageway.

See a wider view on Geograph.

VIP in Clarendon Mall

The latest business to move into Clarendon Shopping Centre is called "VIP" which specialises in e-cigarettes. A year or so ago these things were hardly known about but now shops promoting them are springing up all over the place. There are at least three others in town.

As curbs on smoking get tighter and advertising of tobacco products now banned on TV and shops not allowed to display them, this alternative is gaining prominence. The posters here depict smoking as a glamorous, cool activity and are reminiscent of the ads from the 30s and 50s showing film stars with provocative cigarettes in their mouths.

Crumbs on the Civic Square

Yesterday I showed you the Church carol singers on Hyde Civic Square.

They were giving out free mince pies to passing shoppers, which led to the falling of a few crumbs on the ground but they were soon swept up.

A serendipitous shot

I was trying to photograph something parked on the reflective surface of the wet Civic Square but sometimes you take a shot and then you find it is out of focus and irrecoverable but then you find a portion of interest and shape it into something else.

That is what I call Serendipity.

Old Benches Storeroom

Yesterday I showed you the New benches in Clarendon Shopping Centre.

The old benches it seems are currently in an empty unit that is home to the "I Love Hyde" team who were responsible for organising the Indoor Market Art Project.

Perhaps the old benches will be usefully recycled somewhere.
